An Anecdote
The Savages' Margo Martindale

The Savages has some huge names like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who’s an amazing actor…

ST: The Savages started off as a New York production but it moved out to Los Angeles for the end because they wanted to do the mix out there. The director didn't want me working from my studio; she wanted me right next to her so she could come and sit with me and work with me.

We kept the most ridiculous hours: I was in every day at 10am and left at 3:30am. We had meals shipped in it was just a very long workday.

My manager was out of town - he was in New York he was working on a documentary about the club Squeezebox, where I used to play – and he rents a guesthouse behind a large house from the family that lives in the main house and it's right near where we're working and he's not there, so I asked him if I could borrow the house.

Now, the woman who lives in the main house, she's an actress and her husband used and to be an actor and they have a lot of actor friends. She's an actress, she's been in a lot of things she's in the next season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. She's been in a lot Wood Allen movies and most famously she played a sister in Crimes and Misdemeanors - the one who has the scene where she describes a blind date she had where the guy goes to the bathroom on her - I don’t know if you remember this but it's a great movie and an unbelievable scene anyway, she's the landlady.

I came in one day, I had left my wallet at work and I wanted to borrow some money from the people in the house who I'm also friends with, so I could buy my coffee before I went to work and I walked in the door and there was somebody else there in the house; a friend of theirs, who was staying with them, and she says “excuse, me who are you?” and I said “umm I’m…” She interrupted me “oh! You’re Stephen aren't you, oh! I’m Margo, I’m a friend of Jamie and Caroline’s, they told me you were staying here. How are you?”

Part II

We're talking for quite awhile she seems really familiar to me I knew she was an actress and I’m thinking this woman’s really familiar her voice is really jogging my memory; its really just hitting a cord with me, so, finally I said “well, what do you do Margo?” “I’m an actress” “well… I kind of knew you were an actress, but what were you in what was the thing that you're in?” and she said “I was in million dollar baby, the mother of the boxer” and I m thinking, of course that's not it… there's something else that she's in what is that thing that she's in.

I went in to work, but I still thought it was cool that to meet the mother from million dollar baby, and I told this story. They were like:

-“Oh that's so neat you met the mother from Million Dollar Baby. What's her name? Margo?”
I said. “Yeah." They said "...and you don't know what movie she's in? It's the savages; she's in the savages, the movie you've been working on everyday until 3:30 in the morning?!”

I was so sleep deprived and I had just been working on scoring the scene that she's in. She's in a very funny scene that'll be in the trailers and she’s a featured acres in the movie and I’ve scored - I’ve written music to scenes that she's in and seen it over and over and over again and that's why her voice was familiar to me; it was because I had just been listening to it the day before. She thought this was funny too when I went home and gave her the ten dollars back, because she did lend me ten dollars.
