This interview took place on 01/17/07. These are some of the questions asked by fans.
What were the last 5 cd's you bought?
ST: Miles Davis and Gil Evans "Miles Ahead."
Also there was a 25th Anniversary EP of good vibrations, that had different mixes and studio outtakes with different versions of the song, and a live version and different stuff. The song I guess changed a lot while they were writing it and some versions were really kinda crappy but it was very fascinating and An instrumental take that's really great, because it's fantastic instrumentation.
All these types of music give you more ideas for your movies, right?
ST: Yes
What's your favorite movie?
ST: I don't think I have a favorite movie to be honest.
Dodgeball maybe? That is one we watch a lot. It's because it's too funny.
I can say that there are...*pauses* What's my favorite movie?
You know, I can say this, that everyone should go through a period where they watch as many movies as possible by the same director so they should go rent a bunch of Woody Allen movies, they should rent a bunch of Robert Altman movies. They should rent a bunch of early Stanley Kubrick, they should rent a bunch of Preston Sturges, they should rent movies by Frank Capra, they should rent movies by Billy Wilder and then newer directors, people should be paying attention to the The Coen Brothers and Spike Jones.
You know I love anything that George Clooney does. I never watched ER and I never really believed in his celebrity, and then, I just think he's just phenomenal.
I like anything with Matt Damon in it. I think that He's an incredible actor and he really picks his movies well.
People should watch old Scorcece movies everything up through Casino that he did is something that should be watched.
I like watching Leonardo Di Caprio movies; I think he's fantastic. I like watching Johnny Depp movies; but Matt Damon picked better movies than anybody.
I loved American dreamz. It's a really fun movie.
Are you a procrastinator?
ST: You can only procrastinate so much in film because the schedule will get away from you.
So you're not?
ST: You know, I am by nature a procrastinator but films fight against it so reach a point where if you procrastinate in film the point at which you will have to stay up all night every night until recording can occur like 4 weeks ahead of the recording date so you really have to watch it. The other thing is directors want to hear music on an ongoing basis so you can't save it all till the end. They'll say "let's see some more stuff on Friday", so it might be Tuesday so maybe you take the rest of Tuesday off but if you don't really start Fridays music on Wednesday then you're just going to have to work all day on Thursday and stay up through the night. The internal deadlines are fairly regular and you have to keep up with it. That's one of the reasons I like it. It forces me to do it.
One last thing when is your birthday, how tall are you...?
ST: How tall I am?
My birthday is august 29th I share a birthday with Charlie Parker and Michael Jackson. My birthday is also the day the Katrina hit New Orleans.
I'm 5'10"
What's your favorite book?
Well I'm not much of a reader because I lost my glasses and I can't make out the letters.
You know what, it sounds funny but it's really just sad. For years I just thought my reading skills had deteriorated for some mysterious reason then I found out I was blind...well not blind but it's hard for me to see. Everything looks really tiny to me... all the letters, they're not really blurry so much as they just look like they're further away, and then I lost my glasses on a recent trip to New York, so now I'm back to not reading.
